A Loveland, CO RV Camping Trip Itinerary
By Joe Laing, El Monte RV Rentals
RV travelers flock to the Loveland area, and who can blame them? The variety of year-round activities, combined with the scenic wonders for which the area is famous, make it the perfect RV camping destination. In the foothills of the mighty Rockies, Loveland offers something exciting for every type of RV traveler. Here’s just one suggested itinerary when you go.
RV Camping in Loveland, CO
Let’s start our Loveland RV camping trip itinerary by identifying great places to camp. Because Loveland is right next door to Rocky Mountain National Park, campgrounds are plentiful. Here are three we’ve heard great things about:
-
Riverview RV Park – campsites along the Big Thompson River, between the National Park and Loveland
-
Fireside RV Park – Twenty minutes west of Loveland, on the way to RMNP.
-
Boyd Lake State Park – Just north of Loveland, this scenic state park features a modern RV campground with all the amenities.
Loveland’s Outdoor Attractions
Now that you’ve decided where to stay, it’s time to decide where to play! Rocky Mountain National Park is, of course, a major draw for outdoor recreation fans. Hike, bike, fish, go horseback riding or simply take one of the breathtakingly scenic drives inside the Park.
Climbing fans will also love the challenge of the area’s “fourteeners”, especially Long’s Peak. RV campers who enjoy fishing will find plenty of sport in waterways like Bear Lake and Upper Columbine Creek. Trails lead to most major natural wonders within the Park, and less active visitors can still be thrilled going over the Continental Divide on Trail Ridge Road.
But that’s just a fraction of what the outdoors offers in the Loveland, CO area! The drive up Big Thompson Canyon is an awesome introduction to the Rocky Mountains. Another spectacular route nearby is Highway 14 through Poudre Canyon.
If you’re hoping to stay active but stay in Loveland, three challenging golf courses can help, and the City of Loveland trail system is truly impressive. We mentioned Boyd Lake State Park; don’t miss the chance to hike, bike, boat, or fish this picturesque lake. And closer to town, Lake Loveland boasts an excellent swim beach as well as well-planned sports and recreation areas.
Loveland’s Historical Attractions
One more reason RV campers have learned to love Loveland is the region’s fascinating history. Founded in 1877, this fast-growing city has evolved from its agricultural beginnings to become a booming technology center. The Loveland Museum and Gallery details the town’s rise to prominence, as well as highlighting Loveland’s strong artistic bent.
Your family might also enjoy a stop at Timberlane Farm Museum, a living history exhibit that teaches the area’s agricultural heritage. Or take the short drive into the village of Estes Park and find a whole world of regional history at the Stanley Hotel and Museum, MacGregor Ranch Museum and the Enos Mills Cabin Museum.
With all that waiting for you in the Loveland, Colorado area, why on earth would you vacation anywhere else? Use this short itinerary to plan your own RV camping trip to Loveland, and plan to fall in love with this city in the shadow of the Rockies!
